Magnificent and Devastating Revolutionary War Sliding Iron Bar Shot Extended Length of 17 Inches 5 pounds 12 ounces
c. 1775 Revolutionary War Period, Naval Military Ordinance Sliding Iron Bar Shot, Extended Length to 17 Inches, weight 5 pounds 12 ounces, Choice Extremely Fine.
Rarely encountered Naval Sliding Bar Shot consisting of two oval convex balls of Iron connected together with connecting sliding bars that allow for a compacted length of 10.25” to fully extend in length when fired to 17 inches. Each ends’ domed convex ball measures a little over 2.75" across and combined the total weight is 5 pounds, 12 ounces. Sliding bar shot ordinance was fired from cannon aboard naval warships to primarily attack and rip apart an enemy ship's rigging, sails, masts, and any unfortunate sailor in its path. As the sliding bar shot left the cannon, it spun out to its full length and inflicted far more damage than could a single, small round cannon ball. When one looks at artwork from Revolutionary War naval battles, the shredded sails one sees dangling from the ships’ yards (horizontal spars) and broken masts are the result of damage from sliding bar shot, standard bar shot and the similar chain shot. This example is the finest example we have offered, being in excellent museum quality condition and has a wonderful, original natural patina.
