Impressive Pair of Hand-Forged Caged Iron Stirrups
c. 1770-80s Revolutionary War Era, Large Impressive Pair of Hand-Forged Caged Iron Stirrups, Very Fine.
This Hand-Wrought Pair of Iron Stirrups has high design for the period. Each Stirrup measures about 5.25” x 5.5” x 5” with a large deep cage. This pair is said to have been found in the Philadelphia area though there is no documentation. Apparently not a perfectly made matched pair as one top loop is triangular and swivels, and the other top loop is rectangular and made solid in place. The purpose of using a cage design at the front of the Stirrup was to keep the horse riders foot protected from getting hung up in the event of a fall. A nice pair for display, particularly for their larger size and even overall natural patina. (2 items).
