Revolutionary War Era Cast Iron Salute Hand-Cannon
c. 1770-83 Revolutionary War Era. Rare Iron Hand Cannon, Salute / Powder Tester, Fine.
This impressively designed, authentic Revolutionary War Era Cast Iron Hand-Cannon is in very solid and working condition. These small cannon were used for various practical reasons including as Salute Cannons and/or as a Powder Tester. A Hand-Cannon is an early form of firearm, possibly among the oldest type of portable firearm, as well as the simplest type. Most examples require direct manual external ignition through a touch hole near bottom without any form of firing mechanism. It may also be considered a forerunner of the handgun. This example measures 4.75” tall with a 5/8” bore, made of solid iron that weighs about 1.5 pounds. This example has an overall even natural rich even metallic patina of a round design with 1 strengthening ring and unusual flared ends. It is ignited by a small touch hole near the base. A rarely encountered, original Revolutionary War Era “museum” piece.
