Revolutionary War Era Rare Cast Iron Salute Hand-Cannon
c. 1770-83 Revolutionary War Era. Rare Iron Hand-Cannon, Salute / Powder Tester, Fine.
This authentic Revolutionary War Era Cast Iron Hand-Cannon in very solid condition. These were used for Salute Cannons and/or as a Powder Tester. A Hand Cannon is an early form of firearm. It is possibly the oldest type of portable firearm, as well as the simplest type of early firearm, as most examples require direct manual external ignition through a touch hole without any form of firing mechanism. It may also be considered a forerunner of the handgun. This Hand Cannon measures 4.5” tall with a 7/8” bore. The top is 1.75” square and its base is 2” square, made of solid Cast Iron that is very heavy (about 3.5 lbs). It is of a square design with chamfered corners and is ignited by a small touch hole near the base. This example has an overall even natural rich metal patina. An original Revolutionary War Era “museum” piece that would great in any period or militaria collection.
