c. 1770-80 Revolutionary War Era, Hand Cannon, Salute / Powder Tester, Cast Iron, Fine.
This impressively designed, authentic Revolutionary War Era Cast Iron Hand-Cannon is in very solid and working condition. These small cannon were used for various practical reasons including as Salute Cannons and/or as a Powder Tester. A Hand-Cannon is an early form of firearm, possibly among the oldest type of portable firearm, as well as the simplest type. Most examples require direct manual external ignition through a touch hole near bottom without any form of firing mechanism. It may also be considered a forerunner of the handgun. This example measures 5” tall with a 5/8” bore, made of solid iron that weighs about 1 pound. It is of a round design with 3 wide strengthening rings around its central barrel and is ignited by a small touch hole near the base. This example has an overall even natural rich even metallic patina. Rarely encountered with this design.
