c. 1770-1780s Revolutionary War Era, Soldiers Camp Wooden Stave Barrel Style Canteen with Wrought-Iron Bands and Top Forged Metal Handle, Choice Very Fine.
This excellent high “Museum” quality original Military Style Wooden Water Canteen measures about 6.25” long sitting on end and 5” in diameter tall laid down being 3.5” in diameter at its ends. Revolutionary War Era Army and/or Militia Soldiers would be required to bring a portable water canteen when reporting for duty. This example has a raised wooden spout and as typical is lacking the plug. The wood and iron surface has a nice patina with dark areas from age and the spout has a nice shape. The four original forged metal bands are fully intact. This standard Barrel type is as shown and described in the Neumann reference work titled, “Early American Antique Country Furnishings” and is typically also illustrated in similar references on the Revolutionary War Era. There is some light actual light overall wear from use, the color and condition is quite natural and exceptional. An impressive addition to any Revolutionary War or period Military Collection that is excellent in eye appeal for display.
