French & Indian War Large English Box-Lock Flint Pistol
c. 1750 French and Indian War Colonial Period, British Box-Lock Flint Pistol, made by “R. Coffin,” Choice Fine.
English made Box-Lock Flint Pistol by “R. COFFIN” has a 5", .60 caliber round steel turn-off cannon barrel with an engraved “1” on the frame and barrel (made as a pair the mate is lacking). Measuring 12" in overall length this Large English, Box-Lock Flint Pistol remains in good mechanical working order. There are (2) Private Proofs; a “CROWN” over “GP” (Gun Maker’s Proof) and a “CROWN” over “V” (VIEWED), both within an oval and rather hard to see. Steel box-lock frame has Decorative Engraving and is Maker Marked on the right side, “R. COFFIN”. Pistol in its original Flintlock configuration, the action is non-fuctional yet could be adjusted to function. The center flint hammer is the older form of a single “Swan-neck” and not double-throated. Its trigger guard also acts as a safety when pushed forward. The original walnut flat slab-side stock has fine Silver Wire Inlay. A small stress crack is located at the frame tang pin, having a small amount of wood fill in the crack, plus a large round vacant Silver escutcheon; with some expected minor scratches and dings from years of actual service.
