Hand-Forged Blacksmith Made Rushlight Candleholder
c. 1700 Colonial Era, American Hand-Forged Blacksmith Made Rushlight Candleholder, Very Fine.
c. 1700s Hand-Forged, Blacksmith made Rushlight and Candleholder, about 12.5” tall, about 7.5” wide. This choice example has a 3” clip at the top to hold the rush and an attached candleholder with drip pan, used as a candle, made by dipping the pith of a rush in tallow. Rushes were cut and dried, then typically dipped in hot fat or oil. When prepared, they would be clipped onto rush holders. A good quality rush would burn for about an hour. This example has three legs for its base that have a tabbed “penny” style foot. It has a very nice even overall natural patina, no apparent detractions and is excellent for any Colonial era display.
