“NOVA VIRGINIAE TABULA” by Arnoldus Montanus
c. 1650, Early Hand-Colored Map of America titled, “NOVA VIRGINIAE TABULA”, by Arnoldus Montanus, after John Smith’s Map, Choice Very Fine.
This Early Engraved Double-Sheet Map measures about 14.25” x 11.75” (by sight), matted and framed under Plexiglas to 19.75” x 17.5” overall. Minor light water spots at lower left near the Compass rose. An ornate Cartouche in upper right corner shows “Notarum explicatio ...Domus Regum ...Ordinariae Domus ...Lucubrationes Anglorum” (locations of buildings, settlements, and English towns), along with a standing Native American Indian shown holding a bow and petting what appears to be a llama and two smaller “native” horned animals. Another apparent Indian native is standing behind. At the upper left, a trio of Winged Cherubs are holding a tapestry with this Map’s title, “NOVA VIRGINIAE TABULA”. At top center is a small Coat-of Arms, and at bottom center are three other Winged Cherubs “building” on a distance scale table with a scribe, and legend “Militaria Germanica communis” below. Rich original colors with outline border in red, black and gold, being ready to hang on display.
