c. 1650 17th Century Axe Head Hand-wrought Iron with Multiple Maker’s Marks, Choice Very Fine.
Excellent heavy Iron Axe Head with a smooth dark natural patina from age with multiple maker’s mark of a “Cross in a Shield” which appears clearly stamped twice on one side of the blade. Smaller florets are connected with a twisting design element and these all appear in a linear arrangement below the maker's marks. The distance from the poll or butt of the axe to the furthest point on the blade measures a large 7.25”. The cutting edge of the blade runs in a slight arc measuring to 7.5”. This is a hefty Axe Head weighing in at 3.2 pounds. We can only imagine the damage this axe head could do to a piece of wood as a tool, or to a person used as a weapon.
