attributed to Elizabeth K. Lindsay (fl. 1800-1840s) PORTRAIT OF ELIZABETH LINDSAY, BISHOP OF KILDARE'S DAUGHTER and PORTRAIT OF LORD CHARLEMONT'S SON [A PAIR] each signed with initials 'E.K.L.' and titled on reverse watercolour 26 by 19cm., 10.4 by 7.5in. Elizabeth Lindsay was the daughter of the Hon. Charles Dalrymple Lindsay (1760-1846), the Church of Ireland Bishop of Kildare and Dean of Christ Church Cathedral. She later married to become Mrs Domville. The first Lord Charlemont, James Caulfield (1728-1799) was President of the RIA, the first President of the Irish Volunteers, and a staunch campaigner against the Union. His Dublin residence is now home to The Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, whilst his folly at Marino is an internationally recognised model of neo-classical architecture. Charlemont had three sons, the eldest of whom, Francis William (1775-1863) became the second Earl Charlemont. The present work is thought to be a portrait of one of the second Earl's two sons, both of whom died young, in their early twenties.€3000-€4000 (IR £2300-£3100 approx.)
