The period 1850-1862 saw substantial exhibition, museum and related building projects in the South Kensington area, starting with the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, completed in 1851 for the Great Exhibition and closing with the construction of the 1862 Exhibition halls. These projects were documented by a team of photographers under the tuition and guidance of Charles Thurston Thompson. They were drawn from a garrison of Sappers stationed in South Kensington and included Lieutenant Corporal B.L. Spackman, who remained affiliated to the South Kensington projects for nearly 20 years and is foremost among the candidates as likely author of the present work.
