Zuni Polychrome Storage Jar,
circa 1880-1890. A well used globular storage jar with an indented base, and decorated with a band of painted red and black birds perched atop geometric motifs, alternating between stylized frogs, each with a painted body, and an applique head. Base slip cream-colored. In Puebloan cosmology frogs are typically associated with rain and fertility; 8" high x 10.75" diameter. Deaccessioned from the Western Reserve Historical Society of Cleveland, Ohio. Extensive spalling at the base of the pot, much of it of some antiquity. Evidence of two large, old cracks in base, both patched with pitch. Two sherds broken and reglued on side. Paint worn.
