Zuni Fetish Turquoise Cabochons Silver Necklace
Featured in this lot is a Zuni Fetish Turquoise Cabochons Silver Choker Necklace. Zuni Fetishes are a fundamental art form for the Zuni tribe. Fetishes are hand carved figurines, often of animals, that hold special symbolic significance for the Zuni peoples. The Zuni Tribe of northern New Mexico remains the primary producer of fetish carvings in Native American culture. These small fetish carvings have been believed by the Zuni to hold protective and/or healing powers and specific animals were also known to provide luck in hunting game. Zuni fetishes can be thought of as objects holding a spiritual significance that can provide supernatural support if treated by the owner with the necessary respect. Hand-carved fetishes are made from a large assortment of natural stones including serpentine, jasper, obsidian, rhodonite & quartz, along with many others. This choker necklace features twelve Sonoran Gold turquoise cabochons evenly spaced between the eleven bird fetishes, with silver barrel bead and silver bead spacers. This beautiful fetish and turquoise necklace measures 18"L.
