Zulu Nation South African Throwing Spear c. 1930's
Featured in this lot is this Zulu Nation South African throwing spear, circa 1930's. This is a long shafted throwing spear; the shaft doesn't appear to be fire hardened, but the spear blade is leaf-like in shape with three inch tang and is secured by wrapped wire. The Zulu produced at least 20 different types of spears. Perhaps the best known of these is the assegai, which was also used by several other Nguni groups in Southern Africa. It was a throwing spear (javelin), as can be seen from the narrow, leaf-shaped blade and long, slender tapering shaft. The condition of this Zulu throwing spear is good, with a small sundering of the wrapped wire and some natural cracks in the shaft consistent with stress on the wood from use. The measurements of this spear are 61 1/2" x 2" x 1".
