Zoot Suit Original Broadway Poster
In film as on Broadway, there are certain iconic poses that stay with us forever. One of the most dramatic is of Edward James Olmos as El Pachuco, the mythical figure that acts as the narrator in Luis Valdez's "Zoot Suit". In all his own "Zoot Suit" glory, and standing tall and proud against an angry Los Angeles of the 1940's, it told the true story of the actual "Sleepy Lagoon murder trail", where a group of Chicano's were falsely charged with murder, and the Zoot Suit riots started. The play previewed in Los Angeles in 1978 near where the actual riots took place, and then went on to Broadway at the famed Winter Garden Theater on March 25th, 1979, becoming the very first Chicano play to ever be produced on Broadway. This is that famous iconic striking original poster of El Pachuco, from the Winter Garden opening of the play.
