Zinc Cigar Store Figure by Wm Demuth, NY. This exact figure is listed in Demuth's 1875 catalog as "Indian Maiden" and was offered for sale at that time for $40. Demuth came up with the idea of casting these metal figures in 1868 and continued producing them through the 1890's. Demuth's idea for zinc figures saw an advantage in leaving them out in the weather, paint would last longer, and the figure would not check or crack like wood. Being heavier than wood, they would also be less susceptible to theft. Demuth exhibited his figures in the 1869 Fair of the American Institute, and, as such was the first art exhibition of show figures and cigar store Indians ever held in the United States. Some minor paint loss. Original wood feathers and replacement wood base. 74 Inches tall overall.
