Spring stone carving of a smiling, rotund, little man crouching down by Didani Masaya of Zimbabwe. Sculptor's name is carved on the bottom edge.
This appears to be Spring stone, an exceptionally hard, dark and very dense serpentinite stone with high iron content and a very fine texture, perfect for a highly polished, smooth finish. It has a rich, reddish brown outside layer of oxidized rock. Spring stone is commonly used in Shona sculpture and is found in the Tengenenge region of Zimbabwe, mined in Guruve, in the north.
Didani Masaya is a well-known, self taught, second generation Zimbabwean artist who has been working with stone and other natural materials for over 20 years. He is the Founder and Director at KuAfrica and former Chairman of the Sculptors Association Of Zimbabwe. Through his organization, Masaya is actively working to advance opportunities for Zimbabwe artists and re structure the industry under principles of fairness in an effort to help successful artists ascend from lives of poverty and become respected for their contribution to business and the benefits the art market brings to the area's economy.
Masaya's artwork has been featured in art publications internationally. His trademark style in sculpture is perfectly expressed in this smooth carving. 10.5x14x9". A few small lower area dings.
