From the Collection of Nick and Suzanne Nicholas. Zia Pottery by Sofia Medina, measures 3.5 in. x 3.25 in., few nips on rim and sides, Sofia Medina (Zia) was born in 1932 and began making pottery in 1963. Trinidad Medina, who was one of Zia's finest potters, taught Sofia all the fundamentals of making traditional Zia pottery. Sofia specialized in making hand coiled Zia pottery. She collected all the materials used on her pottery from within the Zia Pueblo and fired her pots outside the traditional way. She is known for creating some of the largest Zia ollas in the second half of the 20th century. Her pieces are finely made and beautifully painted. Sofia is respected as a Zia pottery master carrying forward her ancient traditions.
