This is a Avalokitesvara, or rather Guanyin, a Bodhisattva of sympathy. In China it is often depicted as a female. Guanyin means ‘hearing the sounds of the world’ in Chinese. In this depiction, Guanyin is standing on a lotus throne looking at the world. The brushwork is fluent and soft. Such pieces can often be found as hanging scrolls in the homes of Buddhists. Zhang Sufang (??? ), born in 1972, is a painter from the province Shanxi.



The work is signed and titled and it bears two seals. It is mounted on cardboard and framed in a mat in a black frame. The piece is, next to some little creases and folds and normal abrasion of the frame, in an allover good condition. The depiction is ca. 81 x 35 cm in size and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 101 x 46 cm.



Guanyin

Guanyin, the Chinese goddess of mercy and compassion, counts among the most venerated figures in Buddhism and is highly respected in Asian cultures. Initially a male figure, it transformed over the centuries to a maternal goddess with wondrous healing powers who bestows solace and luck. As a bodhisattva, Guanyin denied herself entrance into nirvana when she heard the laments of the mortals and helpfully returned to earth. Her name roughly means ‘observer of the cries of the world’.
