Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) Chinese watercolour on paper: 'Wuxia Mountain Clear Autumn'; signed with inscribed poem dedicated to a personal friend for a good cause, dated 1936; 110 cm X 49.5 cm; painting featured on pp. 124 of Shanghai People's Art Publishing (1986) highlighting famous Chinese fine art paintings; Provenance: Acquired in 1988 by a private Canadian collector.

This early work of Zhang Daqian was painted in 1936 at the age of 37. Inspired by the famous Southern Song Dynasty artist ???, Zhang Daqian fully utilized the soft tones of the autumn landscape to express the beautiful mountainous landscape of his home province of Sichuan. With graceful skill, Zhang Daqian beautifully depicts a sprawling landscape of deep and colourful mountains; skiff boats at the base of the waterfall in the soft stream; sheer cliffs dotted with trees; and an autumn sky overlooking the entire landscape.
