Zebulon Pike Letter to Congressmen Montgomery about Expedition Expenses. Incomplete, signed. Montgomery headed the committee considering reimbursements for members of Pike’s 1808 expedition, however unlike Lewis & Clark the request was turned down. Pike concludes in the letter, “…that to dare to murmur against the judgment of the assembled wisdom of the Nation is criminal in a soldier. Therefore I will be silent.” Pike (1779-1813) a soldier, explored & mapped the southern part of the Louisiana Purchase after Lewis & Clark for the U.S. government & for whom Pikes Peak in Colorado was named.
