Soldier and politician (1731–1785) who served in the Connecticut Assembly and commanded the garrison of Forty Fort in the Wyoming Valley during the Revolutionary War. Revolutionary War–dated manuscript DS, signed “Zeb’n Butler Col.,” one page, 8.75 x 5.5, June 11, 1783. Butler certifies a pay request for a soldier in the Continental Army, in part: “This may certify that Buzel Lewis served as a Soldier in the 1st Connect. Regt. in the year 1781 & signed the above order in my presence—He was engaged for the war only & is now honourably discharged.” Signed at the conclusion by Butler. Includes the subsequent partly-printed payment receipt, July 14, 1783, signed by James Grant on the behalf of Lewis. Mounted, double-matted, and framed to an overall size of 15 x 27. Intersecting folds, scattered soiling, and paper loss to left edge, otherwise fine condition.
