Zebulon Butler Signed Certification of Military Service This signed document, measuring 6 3/4" x 8 1/4" is dated October 10, 1782 and is a certification of military service by Butler pertaining to the service of one Jesse Gilbert, in which Butler certifies that Gilbert was in service in the 4th regiment Connecticut line before January, 1781. It is accompanied by a partly printed army pay order signed on behalf of Gilbert by Hez. Gilbert. There is some brown toning over two thirds of the pay order. Butler has also signed the upper portion of the document requesting delivery of notes due to Hezikiah Ripley.Zebulon Butler was born in Ipswich, Massachusetts in 1731 and after military service in the French and Indian War led a group of settlers to the Wyoming Valley in Northern Pennsylvania. A Colonel in the American Revolution, he was defeated by Loyalists under the command of John Butler in 1778 in a prelude to the Wyoming Valley Massacre.
