Zardoz Hanging Face Mask Prop
Zardoz Hanging Face Mask Prop - One of the strangest and yet popular sci-fi films of the 1970's has to be the cult favorite "Zardoz" (1974), written, produced and directed by John Boorman, and starring Sean Connery. Starting with a title that turns out to be the ultimate pun: the grand God of this is based on another manipulator and con artist (rather than a real powerful deity), OZ, of "The Wizard of OZ", (take away the first "WI", and the "of", and you've got "Zardoz"!). The year is 2293 and people are divided into the immortal "Eternals", and the mortal "Brutals". Of course the Brutals do all the bidding for the Eternals (much like our class system of today). All is overseen by a large flying stone head called "Zardoz", who also has an army of Brutal Exterminators who force (and kill) Brutals to bring fear to them so that they work harder and to keep in line. The Brutal Exterminators ride horses and wear double face helmets based on Zardoz's image. This is a face mask made for the production. It is cast from the same iconic Zardoz mold used for the double helmets and includes the original back hanging chain. The Zardoz mask comes from legendary Jerry Neeley's collection. Neeley was the well known film historian, writer, collector and owner of the famous "Jerry's Video" in Los Feliz, CA. Customers, collectors and throngs of directors, writers and industry people would come from around the world to talk to Jerry, whose knowledge and memory of film, especially when it came to Sci-Fi, was encyclopedic, and also to visit his famous collection. Also included is a Letter of Provenience from Jerry Neeley's widow and co-owner of his various video and memorabilia shops as well as a handwritten note from a original crew member. The heavy hanging mask is approx 12"x13". Please note that this is for display only and should not be used as an actual face mask. It's materials were made for on-set (interior soundstage) display only, and should not be displayed, or exposed to sunlight, or outdoor elements.
