Presented in this lot is this handwoven Zapotec rug from Oaxaca, Mexico, circa 1950s. This rectangular wool rug has been designed and handwoven, preserving the art form of the Oaxacan village in the Zapotec culture. A gorgeous piece of artwork, it utilizes neutral, handspun wool that will complement any space. The traditional design pictures geometrical Diamantes with blocks in between. Color is natural undyed cream, light grey, dark grey and brown with grey base. Zapotec rugs, "tapetes", have been appreciated throughout recorded history. Many cultures flourished in the fertile valley and all have appreciated the Zapotec rugs and weaving of garments for decoration. The use of natural dyes has also made the regions works highly sought after. They use natural elements in the area from nature such as bark, moss, insects and nuts as well as course spun yarn to give each piece its special character. The master weavers of the area today are known around the world for their works of art.
This rug is in good overall condition, the weave is tight, wool fringe on both long axis borders, and no obvious damage noted. Measures 34"W x 62"L
