Zapotec Ceramic Urn with Seated Personage
Urn with Seated Deity
Zapotec
A.D. 550 - 850
Ceramic, traces of original paint
Height 12 3/8 in. Width 11 in.

An elaborate headdress commands over half of the visual space in this representation of a deity seated cross-legged in front of a cylindrical urn, which the image conceals from view. A flared headdress of feathers rises above a central glyph; these together form the focal center of the headdress. To each side, at glyph-level, tabs ending in eyes are completed by outward-spreading feathers. More overlapping feathers lie to either side of the strong-featured, standardized face. Large ear spools, the proper left one a replacement, flank the face. The rest of the figure is simply draped, with the hands resting on the knees. An overlarge strand of beads may not be original to the piece. A considerable amount of breakage, especially on the left half, has been reconsolidated with some areas of replacement.

Provenance
Skinner, Boston: sale 2209, 20 September 2003, Lot 49, p.17, ill. p.17
