Zap Comix #1 First Printing (Apex Novelties, 1967) Condition: VG+. This little time-bomb set off a cultural wave still being felt nearly 40 years later. Robert Crumb had grown up reading every comic book he could get a hold of, back in the early 1950s, developing a special love for humor and funny animal titles like Little Lulu and Super Duck. With the incessant urging of older brother Charles, Robert began drawing his own comic stories at an early age, and by the time he was a young adult, his talents were sharply developed. For a lark, he put together enough material for a complete comic (after his strips had been published in "hippy" newspapers like East Village Other), and the final results are this historic book. Publisher Charlie Plymell, a friend of artist S. Clay Wilson, printed the first edition, putting his name in the back cover. First printings of Zap #1 are notoriously tough to come by, as the alternative lifestyle of most of the readers didn't encourage saving material things -- we suspect a good many early copies were sacrificed every time someone ran out of rolling papers! This copy shows some obvious wear, but is still sound and fairly attractive. Fogel's Underground Comix Price Guide GD 2.0 value = $1,600; FN 6.0 value = $4,800.
