Zap Comix #1 Don Donahue File Copy (Apex Noveltie
Zap Comix #1 Don Donahue File Copy (Apex Novelties, 1967) CGC NM 9.4 Cream to off-white pages. Robert Crumb's classic first issue of Zap Comix was a cultural landmine that forever changed the way we look at comic books in this country. This taboo-breaking mind expander was as daring as anything ever attempted in the medium; Crumb took his inspiration from Harvey Kurtzman's Mad and Humbug, and proceeded to push the boundaries until something completely new resulted. This second printing is almost as important, and as rare, as the Charles Plymell-printed first edition. In fact, Don Donahue actually bought Plymell's printing press, teaching himself how to run it as he cranked out these second printing Zaps. Here's a choice example of Donahue's somewhat crude attempt, featuring untrimmed pages, but a ton of vibrant cover color and gloss. Not listed in Overstreet. CGC census 6/05: 3 in 9.4, 3 higher.
