Chinese-French painter (1920–2013) known for his large abstract works; in 2018, his triptych 'Juin-Octobre 1985' sold for $65 million, breaking the record for a work by an Asian artist. ALS in French, one page both sides, 6.75 x 9.75, personal letterhead, April 2, 1981. Handwritten letter by Zao Wou-Ki, commenting on a party attended by fellow artists Balthus and Henri Minchaux, and listing upcoming exhibitions. In full (translated): "A magnificent party with Michaux, Balthus, without you; we’re all sad about your absence. Françoise was very impressed by Balthus’s appearance and charm, completely conquered and seduced; she even considered being his mistress, except for being put off by Seigko’s firmness. — What a laugh! — Here’s François’s text. I find it good; what do you think? François wants to send it to you immediately, so that you can prepare the foreword. As far as what’s going on with Gadoud, everything is arranged. He’s haggling with Hong Kong, Singapore, and the National Gallery of Athens, and he’ll pay the remainder of the transport costs. He says that according to the convention, the Japanese have to pay the round-trip insurance; if not, all the museums involved are going to reduce their liability, and the lenders never want to lend the pictures if all the museums have to take out insurance separately. And at the same time, he prefers to have the Galerie de France as the liaison with Rome (you) and Paris. They’re going to write me a letter to confirm everything, and the Galerie de France is going to prepare: 1) to request full insurance (round-trip) from the Japanese according to the convention, 2) to write to various lenders in Jean Leymaire’s name to specify the following dates and museums: 6 Oct – 8 Nov 81 Fukuoka City Museum, Nov – Dec Tokyu Dept. Store, 1 Apr – 9 May 82 Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art, May – June Kanagawa Museum of Modern Art, Sept – Oct 82 Hong Kong Arts Center, Nov – Dec 82 Singapore National Museum, Spring 83 National Gallery of Athens." In fine condition.
