LS signed "Z. Taylor," one page, 7.75 x 9.75, January 18, 1848. Letter to David Paul Burns in Philadelphia, sent from Baton Rouge. In part: "I beg leave to return to you my sincere acknowledgments for the expression of your friendly sentiments towards me, and for the kind and prudent suggestions which you were pleased to offer"¦I have no intention at present of receding from or advancing beyond the position which I have long since taken in regard to the presidency." In fine condition. Taylor had recently become a national hero for his success in the Mexican-American War and many around the country clamored for a presidential campaign. Initially uninterested in politics, Taylor continued to deny any interest in running for office through February 1848. Ultimately, he would reluctantly enter the race as a Whig, winning the election despite his unclear platform. A desirable letter preceding his 1848 campaign, in which he maintains his apolitical stance on the possibility of his presidency.
