Partly-printed DS as president, signed “Z. Taylor,” one vellum page, 11 x 8, September 26, 1849. President Taylor appoints Edward Grafton a “Passed Midshipman in the Navy of the United States.” Signed at the conclusion by Taylor and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy William B. Preston. In fine condition, with four vertical folds, one through a single letter of signature, and a couple trivial brushes to signature. Grafton, as flag-officer of the frigate Minnesota when the Confederate vessel Merrimac tried to raise the Union blockade, participated in the ensuing engagement at Hampton Roads. He later commanded the steam gunboat Genesee and participated in the bombardment of Fort Morgan. After the war he was placed in Command of the Gettysburg in the North Atlantic. A most elusive format, with an exceptional association, from this president who occupied the White House for little over a year before dying in office.
