LS signed “Z. Taylor,” one page, 8 x 9.75, January 18, 1848. Letter to a gentleman in Philadelphia. In part: “I beg leave to return to my sincere acknowledgments for the expression of your friendly sentiments towards me, and for the kind and prudent suggestions which you were pleased to offer. I most kindly assure you that I have no intention at present of receding from or advancing beyond this position which I have long since taken in regard to the presidency.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature) and light wrinkling. Accompanied by an unsigned engraved portrait. Taylor had recently become a national hero for his success in the Mexican-American War and the public clamored for him to enter the 1848 presidential race. The Whig Party convinced the reluctant Taylor to lead their ticket, despite his unclear platform and lack of interest in politics—he had reportedly never revealed his political beliefs during his military career. His broad appeal drew votes from all across the political spectrum and his campaign proved successful in the November election.
