Choice partly-printed vellum DS as president, signed “Z. Taylor,” one page, 15 x 17.5, March 16, 1849. President Taylor appoints Theodorus Bailey as “a Commander in the Navy.” Boldly signed at the conclusion by Taylor and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy William Ballard Preston. The white paper seal affixed at the bottom remains crisp and fully intact. In fine condition, with intersecting folds and light wrinkling. Bailey, who would go on to achieve the rank of rear admiral, served in the Union Navy and commanded one of the gunboat divisions under Farragut that recaptured New Orleans in the spring of 1862; Admiral Farragut sent Captain Bailey to accept the surrender of the city. Taylor passed away just sixteen months into his term, making his presidential appointments quite scarce.
