Partly-printed DS, signed “Z. Taylor Col. Comdg.,” one page, 7.75 x 6.5, April 1834. A requisition document “for fuel for Colonel Z. Taylor in the service of the United States, stationed at Fort Crawford,” requesting four cords and four feet for himself and two feet and eight inches for servants. Boldly signed at the conclusion by Taylor. In fine condition, with light toning and show-through from docketing to reverse. Fort Crawford was an outpost of the United States Army located in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, seated at the intersection of two of North America’s greatest water routes—the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers. Taylor commanded the fort from 1829 through 1837, only leaving when he was directed to Florida to participate in the Second Seminole War, where he served with distinction and earned the moniker ‘Old Rough and Ready.’
