Partly-printed DS as president, signed “Z. Taylor,” one page, 17.5 x 14.5, March 8, 1849. Taylor appoints Jacob Collamer “to be Postmaster General of the United States.” Signed at the conclusion by Taylor, and countersigned by Secretary of State John Clayton. Central vertical fold, scattered toning and foxing, Clayton’s signature light, but legible, and mild toning to borders from previous display, otherwise very good condition. The white paper seal is intact, with a partial vertical tear.
In the position of postmaster general, Collamer—a stern, intelligent supporter of the Whig Party—had control of 17,000 jobs...and was purportedly prepared to replace any employee affiliated with the Democrats with someone from his own party. Collamer resigned from office following Taylor’s death and rejoined the Vermont Supreme Court, eventually elected to Congress and as a senator drafted the bill authorizing President Abraham Lincoln to use force against southern secession. Any document signed by Taylor while as president is exceedingly rare, with this example made all the more interesting by its colorful recipient.
