Zachary Taylor Rare Letter Signed as P Zachary Taylor Rare Letter Signed as President - About West P
Zachary Taylor Rare Letter Signed as President - About West Point - to Sam Houston! Letter Signed ("Z. Taylor"), as president, 2 pages, recto and verso, 8" by 10", Washington, June 30, 1850. To the founder of the Texas Republic, Sam Houston, then a U.S. Senator from the State of Texas, but addressed here as "General." In excellent condition. With fine steel engravings of both Taylor and Houston. Here the President discusses an appointment to West Point with Sam Houston - lately the President of a country of his own. "I have received and duly considered your favor of the 19th inst. setting forth the claims of young Carr to a Cadets appointment, and am sorry to say in reply that it will not be possible to include him among those to be appointed 'at large' for the current year. Those appointments, as you doubtless know, are limited to ten, while the number of applicants is more than one hundred, including many sons of officers who have been killed or died in service and whose claims are certainly very strong, particularly when the intention of the law, giving those appts. to the President, is borne in mind. It would afford me pleasure to meet your wishes in the matter, could I do so consistently with my views of propriety, which I am sure you would be last to expect me to disregard." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
