The medal is 1 5/16" or 33mm solid bronze third style and is in the “first strike” style of 1849. The obverse shows a bust of President of the United States Zachary Taylor surrounded by “Zachary Taylor President of the United States” and “1849” below. The reverse shows clasped hands (one clothed and the other without clothing) with a crossed peace pipe and pipe tomahawk above and the legend “Peace And Friendship”. The same reverse style was used on all Peace Medals after 1801. The medal was commissioned by William Medill. The Commissioner of Indian Affairs, and designed etched by Henry K. Brown (obverse) and John Reich (reverse). The medal is displayed on a strand of Plains Native American Indian trade beads. The beads include Hudson Bay red white hearts and Venetian Chevron beads on a sinew strand. Age of medal is unknown. Comes in a 8.25"x12.25" glass top display case.
