Zachary Taylor Forget Me Not Box.
Zachary Taylor "Forget Me Not" Box. Often referred to as a "patch box," the manufacturing company apparently made these boxes in the late 1840s to early 1850s, as we have seen them for four presidents: Washington (always a popular subject), Andrew Jackson (died 1845), John Quincy Adams (died 1848), and Zachary Taylor (died 1850). It is uncertain whether they were intended to honor the deceased presidents exclusively, or to house a remembrance of a departed loved one, such as a lock of hair (this box has a very large lock of braided hair under the glass on the back!). These boxes tend to come with some wear and age issues; and this one is no exception. The lid has become disconnected from the box and has some very minor wear on the edges. However, the gold foil trim, often partially missing, is complete all around. The small mirror which sits inside the lid has also become detached but is not cracked. The paper lining the inside of the box has folded and wrinkled slightly; minor attention from a good conservator would restore this box to exceptional display condition.1.75" x 2.75" x .60".
