Zachary Taylor document signed during his brief time as President. Completed in manuscript, partly-printed document signed “Z. Taylor'' is translated into French, Spanish, English and Dutch. Countersigned “Jno Clayton” as Secretary of State and “Wm T. Russell” as Collector. In part, “…leave and permission are hereby given to Peleg W. Gifford master or commander of the Bark called Clarice of the burden of 237 & 13/95 tons, or thereabouts, lying at present in the port of New Bedford bound for Indian Ocean and laden with Provisions, stores and utensils for a whaling voyage…” The lower portion is addressed to whomever may encounter the ship on the high seas: “Most Serene, Serene, most Puissant, Puissant, High, Illustrious, Noble, Honorable, Venerable, wise and prudent, Lords, Emperors, Kings, Republics, Princes, Dukes, Earls, Barons, Lords, Burgomasters, Schepens, Counselors, as also Judges, Officers, Justiciaries and Regents of all the god cities and places, whether Ecclesiastical or Secular, who shall see these patents, or hear them read: We…make known, that the master of Barque Clarice appearing before us, has declared upon oath, that the vessel, called Clarice of New Bedford of the burthen of about 237 & 13/95 tons, which he at present navigates, is of the United States of America, and that no subjects of the present belligerent powers have any part or portion therein, directly nor indirectly, so may God Almighty help him…'' Document measures 21'' x 16.75'' with a superb paper seal, 2.25” in diameter, affixed with red wax in the right center. Horizontal fold passing through each signature and holes at some folds. Expertly strengthened on verso. Overall in very good condition with a darkly penned signature by Taylor.
