ZEBULON BUTLER</b> (1731 - 1795) American army officer who served in the French and Indian War, led settlers into the Wyoming Valley and commanded the fort there when it was attacked by hostile Indians. Butler escaped with his life, but his command was massacred. D.S. "<i>Zeb. Butler Col</i>", 1p. 12mo., Camp Philipsburgh, Aug. 13, 1781 to the "<i>Hono.[rable] Committee [of the] PayTable Hartford</i>". Butler certifies that Philip Henry Slist, a soldier in the late Colonel Warner's regiment and now in the fourth Connecticut Regiment, had served in the Continental Army since January 1778 and was an inhabitant of Windam, Connecticut.
