Z. S. Liang (b. 1953), Stories of Valor (2010), oil on canvas, 44 x 70 inches, signed lower left.

According to Z. S. Liang, “For hundreds of years, the American Indians expressed themselves through pictographic drawings found on canyon walls. These pictorial representations of valor in war and successful hunts were also recorded on sides of lodges and prime buffalo hides well before arrival of the white man. These painted hides were worn and displayed to identify and describe the deeds of individuals held in high esteem. Wearing his war shirt and bonnet, and holding the spear he used in many battles, Mountain Chief ‘Big Brave’ of the Piegan Blackfeet is describing his stories of valor to the painter of the robe. The chief’s war horse with the sacred shield hanging from the saddle and trophies from many battles are proudly displayed. The painter’s assistant is preparing pigments and two highly respected warriors are observing the documentation of these significant events.”
