This is an original vintage 20th century “mingqaq” coiled grass basket from Yupik Alaskan Indian artist, Mary E. George. The basket has an amazing zig-zag open body section with bug effigy figures below, a true work of art. Mary E. George is a Niugtaq or Newtok, Alaska artist from the Yup’ik or Yupik indigenous Native American tribes of Alaska, commonly referred to as First Nations. The coiled basket is made from the beach grasses of Newtok and shows a natural purple dyed coloring with four bug effigy figures. The basket is well preserved in very good condition.
