Yuma, Arizona Prison Hand Braided Headstall c1950s
Featured in this lot is this Yuma, Arizona prison made hand braided headstall circa 1950's. The headstall features a wonderfully and professionally crafted leather and braided leather construction. The reins are braided with a four strand braid with Turkshead knots and barrel braids throughout and are highly advanced braids that decorate worthy tack. The bit is a short shank curb bit that shows thick leather cheek pieces and shows rein chains attached to the reins. Prisons in America gave inmates the opportunity to be productive and would generally provide leather or horse hair to hitch and are highly desirable by western collectors. The condition of this braided leather headstall shows a missing crown piece to the headstall and wear and suppleness to the leather of the reins and to the cheek pieces of the headstall. The measurements of this headstall is 105" from tip of reins to the tip of cheek straps and the headstall measures 18" x 6" x 2 1/2".
