I found this fascinating little piece of Yugoslavian art at a recent estate sale and just had to bring it home to investigate it. I haven't gotten very far, really.

This is an oddly shaped piece of wood, VERY finely grained, possibly a knot, that has been finely and beautifully carved with designs that must be native to Yugoslavia. The only clue to its native origins is the tiny, round white paper sticker on the bottom, that reads, "Made in Yugoslavia."

The wood has been carved into what looks most like a little vessel, with a handle at one of the long ends and a spout at the opposite end. The handle has a teardrop shaped hole in it, possibly to accommodate a piece of leather or rope so that it can be attached to a hiker's waistband and used to scoop a cool drink from a stream along the path.

Please email with any questions or to request additional photos. If you should happen to know what this really is, I would be so grateful if you'd email to let me know. Thanks!
