One rare stereoview of Black's Hotel in Yosemite. The only one like this in a collection of hundred of stereoviews we sorted. No photographer is listed. View is exterior of hotel with at least 4 people and a horse outside. Medium contrast. Black's Hotel was originally known as Lower House (c.1850s). Alexander Gordon Black took over the hotel in the 1860s, having future Yosemite hotel owner Leidig run it for him 1866-1870. Black moved to the the valley in 1870 and took control, beginning by tearing down the old structure and rebuilding. This view appears to be the earlier (pre-1869) version as it does not have the upper railing or sign seen in other views. It could also not be completely finished. The hotel lasted until the 1880s. John Muir had a memorable night while care taking the hotel in the winter of 1872 when a large earthquake shook the valley and caused avalanches of boulders.
