Magnificent African "Yoruba" Sculpture. Standing 45" tall this incredible collector's piece is carved of a dark wood and has beautiful detail. There are about twelve million Yoruba in Nigeria. The name "Yoruba" does not refer so much to a clearly defined ethnic group as to many local populations who share similar customs. Yoruba life is centered on the village, town or city rather than on a central government. Although the ancient city of Ife is the religious center of the Yoruba, and its king the nominal religious leader, it has not wielded authority over the Yoruba as a whole since medieval times, when it was the capital of an extensive empire. The Yoruba use works of art for all levels of political, religious, and family organization. Each village has a chief who is surrounded by emblems of his authority and who performs rituals at an ancestral altar. The Yoruba believe in a single, supreme creator god who retreated from his involvement in daily life after creation was complete.

Sculpture is incased in a 82" tall, 16" wide and 19" deep display case, composed of lacquer and lucite. Truely a needed addition to any African Sculpture collection!!
