<B>Yoruba (Nigeria)</B></I><BR>Tray for Ifa Divination,<I>Opon Ifa</B></I><BR>Wood, traces of pigment<BR>Height: 12 5/8 inches Width: 13 3/8 inches<BR><BR>Similar to the previous example, this tray has a wider raised border containing a series of representational motifs in low relief. At the top, as on every divination tray, is the face of Eshu/Elegba, in this case rendered very wide and dominated by diamond-shaped eyes. From the face, on either side, there is a series of mirrored motifs separated by smaller rectangular dividers: a mudfish, a crab, a four-looped endless knot. At the bottom is an unidentified motif comprised of a series of parallel lines, the same width as the face opposite it. There is some old loss on the underside.<BR><BR>Provenance: H.
