Yoruba (Nigeria), Tray for Ifa Divination, Wood
Yoruba (Nigeria)
Tray for Ifa Divination
Wood, traces of pigment
Height: 4 5/8 inches Width: 13 ¾ inches Depth: 12 ¼ inches

This rectangular tray is one of the more elaborate and unusual ones known, by virtue of the two bowl-holding figures to either side of the Eshu/Elegba head at the top. Each of these is a full figure, with arms encircling the proportionately large bowl, and with legs extended to its side. The figures have well-patinated heads on extended necks. The usual raised border area in this case is comprised of an endless knot that begins at one subsidiary figure and ends at the other. The two bowls were most likely used to hold the 16 sacred palm nuts that hold the secrets of divination, eight in each bowl. There are a few old losses on the back.

Provenance: H.
