<B>Yoruba (Nigeria)</B></I><BR>Lidded Divination Container, <I>Opon Igede</B></I><BR>Wood, traces of pigment<BR>Height: 9 inches Dia. at join: 14 ½ inches<BR><BR>This container for a diviner's equipment has an elaborately decorated, dome-shaped lid with a snake encircling a dog, the snake biting one of the dog's feet. Below this scene are two lizards in high relief. The interior of the bowl-like bottom section is divided into five compartments. The lid has a crack on the turtle's left. There is insect damage on the lid both outside and inside. There is extensive insect damage inside and outside the bowl, especially the bottom.<BR><BR>Provenance: H.
